Responsive upscaling

Designing what a layout does with the space it gains on very wide screens, rather than only what it drops as screens narrow.
Almost every responsive layout is designed downward. The desktop composition is the one the team drew, and the work is deciding what happens as the screen gets smaller: what collapses, what stacks, what hides behind a menu. Responsive upscaling is the opposite question, and it is the one that usually goes unasked. Above the last breakpoint there is no design, so the layout does whatever its widths happen to imply, which is normally one of two things: a column that keeps growing until the line is far past a comfortable measure, or a page that caps its container and leaves an enormous field of empty gutter on either side.
The term comes from the Baymard Institute, whose large-screen research found that plenty of sites gain hundreds of pixels of viewport and spend none of it. Their argument is that the surplus is a design opportunity rather than a rounding error, and their suggestions are the ones worth stealing: cap the reading measure and use the extra room for something else, promote a sidebar or a table of contents that was hidden at narrower sizes, show more items per row where the items are genuinely comparable, widen media rather than text, or give the page air on purpose so the emptiness reads as composition instead of as an accident. The point of the list is that each item is a decision. Emptiness chosen is fine; emptiness left over is what readers notice.
This is not the same claim as mobile first, and the two are complementary rather than opposed. Mobile first is a method for designing upward from the smallest screen, so that the narrow layout is the considered one instead of the leftover. Responsive upscaling is about the region past the largest breakpoint the method ever reaches, which mobile-first work tends to leave undesigned precisely because it was designed from the other end. A team can do both: build up from narrow, and then decide deliberately what the layout becomes when the screen keeps going.
Two practical notes. Cap by content rather than by number: text caps at its measure, tables and media often want everything they can get, and a single page-wide maximum applied to all of them is the blunt version of this that produces the giant-gutter look. And test the state you are designing, which means an actual wide window, not a scaled-down browser view. Ultrawide monitors, side-by-side windows on a large display, and television browsers are all real, and all of them land in the region where nobody checked.
