Oversized typography
also called big type (community), huge type (community), bold typography (community), typography-heavy design (community)
Type set far past reading size so the words carry the layout, the headline doing the work a photograph would otherwise be hired for.
Oversized typography is type promoted from label to image. A headline set at four or six times reading size stops being read word by word and starts being seen all at once, which means it can hold the top of a page on its own: no hero photograph, no illustration, no gradient. The practical consequence is editorial rather than decorative. A layout carried by words is a layout whose loudest element is the one thing you actually wrote, so the copy has to be short enough to survive at that scale and good enough to deserve it. Five words is a poster; fifteen is a paragraph pretending to be one.
The first hazard is that a text face’s own spacing is wrong up there. Letterfit and tracking are drawn for the size a face is meant to be read at, so the same values that look correct in a paragraph look loose and gappy at 80 pixels, and the gaps between particular pairs start to show as holes. Display type is therefore tracked in, usually by a small negative amount, and its leading is pulled well under a single line height so that two lines of a headline read as one object rather than as two rows. A variable font with an optical size axis does part of this on its own, and a family with a real display cut does all of it: thinner strokes, tighter sidebearings, and smaller counters, drawn for exactly this use. See optical size for what a face is actually changing when it is asked.
The second hazard is the phone. Huge type in a narrow column is four words a line, then a hyphenation problem, then a headline taller than the screen it is on, and no amount of tightening fixes it. This is why fluid typography belongs to the look rather than sitting next to it: the clamp that ties the display size to the viewport is what keeps the same headline a poster on a laptop and a headline on a handset. Set the floor at something a narrow column can hold, and check the result at the width where the longest word in the headline is the constraint.
The word names a scale, not a set of relationships, which is what separates it from typographic hierarchy. Hierarchy is about the intervals between levels, and a page can have a perfectly clear one where nothing is larger than 24 pixels; oversized typography is a claim about the absolute size of the top level, and it usually flattens the hierarchy underneath by leaving one enormous thing and a lot of small ones. It is a type decision several looks borrow rather than a look of its own, which is why Swiss style and editorial web design both lean on it without being it, and why nothing here animates: type that moves is kinetic typography.
