Holographic foil
also called iridescent, iridescence, holo gradient, pearlescent, oil slick (community)
A finish that shifts hue with viewing angle, imitating foil, soap film, or a CD surface with banded rainbow gradients over a pale metallic ground.
The physics in one sentence: a film only a few hundred nanometres thick reflects light from its top and its bottom surface at once, the two reflections arrive slightly out of step, and they cancel some wavelengths while reinforcing others, so white light comes back split by colour. That is thin-film interference, and it is why soap bubbles, oil on wet tarmac, beetle shells and the data side of a CD all do the same trick. Two consequences matter for drawing it. The colour order is fixed, because it follows the spectrum rather than a designer’s preference, so a convincing foil runs its hues in sequence and never jumps from green to magenta and back. And the effect is angle dependent by definition: change the path length through the film and you change which wavelengths cancel, which is why the surface appears to move when you do.
That last point is the whole difference between this and specular-highlight. A highlight is one light source reflected in one place, a bright spot that says the surface is smooth, and it stays the same colour as the light that made it. Iridescence is wavelength separation happening across the entire surface, and no single part of it is “the light”. Get this wrong and you produce a foil card with a hot white blob on it, which reads as plastic rather than as foil. Gloss is the related finish for a wet, polished look, and it is also achromatic: it modulates lightness, not hue.
The screen version is a stack of gradients rather than a simulation. A pale metallic ground, usually a near-white with a cool grey mixed into it, carries a banded gradient of saturated hues in spectral order, plus a conic or second linear pass at a different angle to break the regularity, with blend modes doing the mixing so the bands sit in the metal rather than on it. Mesh-gradient shares the technique of layering colour fields and none of the constraint: a mesh gradient is free to put any hue next to any other, where a foil that does so stops looking like a physical surface. Aurora-ui is closer in mood, soft glowing bands behind an interface, but it reads as light in the air rather than as a finish on an object.
If you want the effect to be true rather than merely pretty, tie it to something that changes. A device-orientation or pointer-driven tilt moves the gradient the way a real card moves in the hand, and that is the moment the surface stops being a texture. It also has to be optional: an angle-driven sheen is motion, so it belongs behind a reduced-motion check, and device orientation needs permission on some platforms and should degrade to a still image rather than to nothing. Two more practical notes. Contrast is the usual failure here, since text over a full-spectrum surface has no reliable background luminance to sit on, so keep type off the foil or give it a solid plate. And the register carries strong associations, holographic stickers, trading cards, festival branding and late-nineties CD-ROM packaging, which is either exactly what you want or an accident waiting to happen.
