Frutiger Metro

Frutiger Metro is a mashup, and the only way to hold it steady is to name both parents. Frutiger Aero supplies the subject matter: bubbles, water, sky, leaves, silhouetted people mid-leap, swooshes, and an unembarrassed optimism about technology. Metro design supplies the drawing: everything flat, everything vector, type set large and light and snapped to a grid, colour arriving as blocks rather than as lighting. Put them together and you get Aero’s imagery with the gloss taken out of it, which is a genuinely different look from either parent rather than a halfway point.

Read the two contrasts one sentence each way and the word stops being slippery. Against Aero: Aero is glossy, skeuomorphic and part photographic, with real water, real grass, wet highlights and lens bloom, whereas Frutiger Metro redraws the same scene as flat shapes with no specular anything. Against Metro: Metro is austere, typographic and motion-led, a system of solid tiles that refuses illustration almost entirely, whereas Frutiger Metro fills those flat planes with exactly the illustration Metro was built to avoid. Aero says look how real this is, Metro says look how little I need, and Frutiger Metro says look how cheerful vector art can be.

Say the awkward part plainly: this is a retroactive, internet-coined genre name, not a vendor style. Nobody shipped a Frutiger Metro guideline. The name was assembled years after the fact by people cataloguing the visual mood of roughly 2007 to 2013, and it circulates alongside “Vectordelia” and a rude community label, “vector vomit”, for the maximalist end of it. That is why its boundaries get argued about: two catalogues will draw the line between this and Aero in different places, and neither has any authority to settle it. Use the word to point at a look, not to certify one.

On screen the register is cheap in all the right ways, which is much of why it aged into stock illustration. Everything in it is a path, a solid fill or a linear gradient, so it scales, it compresses, and it themes. The traps are the ones any illustration-heavy register has. Silhouetted figures carry the whole diversity of your product’s imagined audience in a shape with no face, gradients on saturated hues are where banding shows up first, and a busy vector field behind text will lose a contrast check long before it looks wrong to you. It sits historically just after the Y2K aesthetic, sharing its taste for gloss and optimism while doing away with the chrome.
