The turn of the millennium look of chrome type, bubble shapes, translucent plastic, and lens flares, revived as a web and app style.
The vocabulary is specific enough to check off. Type is chrome: a metallic gradient running down the glyphs, an outline around them, and a hard specular streak across the middle. Shapes are bubbles and lozenges, rounded far past what a radius scale would allow, with a gloss highlight sitting inside the top edge so the surface reads as translucent plastic rather than as paint. Backgrounds are skies, water, and soft blue gradients, and something in the frame is usually flaring: a four point star, a lens streak, a burst of white where a light source is implied but never drawn.
It belongs to roughly 1998 to 2004, and it came from hardware as much as from graphics. Translucent coloured plastic arrived with the iMac G3, Aqua gave every button a gel highlight and a pulse, chrome lettering was what a CD sleeve or a film title did to promise the future, and the whole palette was carried by the optimism attached to the millennium itself. The adjacent term is Frutiger Aero, which names the slightly later, gentler branch of the same family: glossy, nature-facing, full of water droplets, grass, and clean blue skies, running through mid-2000s consumer software.
The revival started around 2020 on TikTok and Pinterest, moved through fashion and music packaging, and reached interfaces as a deliberately dated register for music apps, games, merch stores, and anything addressing an audience nostalgic for a decade it may not have lived through. Modern CSS makes it much cheaper than it was the first time, when chrome type meant a bitmap: a gradient clipped to text, a couple of layered inset shadows, and a blurred radial for the flare will do most of it.
Two cautions carry over from the original era. Chrome type is decoration first and legible second, so it belongs to display sizes and needs a plain fallback wherever text has to be read rather than admired, and a gradient clipped to glyphs has no contrast value you can measure with a single colour. And gloss is an affordance in this style rather than a flourish: if every surface is glossy then gloss no longer marks the controls, which is the same problem skeuomorphism ran into and the reason flat design happened next.
