Accent color
also called primary color (material), tint color (hig), brand accent, highlight color
The one saturated colour an interface spends sparingly on the things it wants clicked, so its rarity is what makes it read as important.
An accent works on a budget. The colour itself carries no meaning; what carries meaning is that almost nothing else on the screen is wearing it. A panel with one accent-coloured button says press this, and the same panel with an accent button, an accent heading, an accent border and an accent icon says nothing at all. The rule of thumb most systems land on is that the accent should be the smallest coloured area in any view it appears in.
Every vocabulary names it differently. Material calls it primary and gives it a
family of roles (primary, on-primary, primary container) so that a single decision
propagates to text and fills that must sit on it. Apple calls it the tint colour,
and treats it as something the person can change. Radix ships it as an accent
scale of twelve steps, on the argument that one accent value is never enough:
the same hue is needed as a faint fill, a solid, and a readable text colour. CSS
has an accent-color property too, but it is a much narrower thing, only
recolouring the parts of native form controls the browser draws for you.
The value itself usually comes from one step of a color ramp and reaches components through a semantic colour name, which is why reskinning a product can be a single substitution. Brand colour and accent colour are related but not the same job: a brand red tuned for a logo at 200 pixels often fails contrast as a 13 pixel label, so the accent is typically a tuned relative of the brand hue rather than the brand hue itself.
The accent must also never be the only thing saying something. A destructive button that differs from a safe one by hue alone, or a selected row marked only by a wash of accent, disappears for a reader with a colour vision deficiency and for anyone in bright sun. Pair it with position, weight, a label, or a check.
