Visual balance

The distribution of visual weight across a composition, reached by mirroring elements, by setting one large element against several small ones, or by radiating from a centre.
People read a layout as if it had mass. Put a heavy element on one side of a page with nothing to answer it and the composition feels like it is about to tip over, even though nothing is moving and nobody could say why. Balance is the arrangement that removes that feeling: weight distributed across the composition so no side is left unanswered. The useful mental picture is a beam on a fulcrum, where an element’s pull is its weight multiplied by its distance from the centre.
There are three ways to reach it. Symmetry is the easy one: mirror the elements across an axis and the balance is guaranteed, which is why it reads as formal, stable, and a little static. Asymmetry is the interesting one: one large element on one side answered by two or three smaller ones on the other, further out, so the composition settles without repeating itself. Radial balance arranges everything around a centre, as a dial, a hub of orbiting labels, or a circular menu does. Balance and symmetry are not the same claim, and the difference matters: symmetry is one method of balancing, and the most common reason a layout feels lifeless is that symmetry was reached for when balance was what was wanted.
What makes an element heavy is worth naming, because these are the knobs available when something is tipping. Size is the first and largest. Contrast against the background is the second: a dark block outweighs a pale one of the same size. Saturation adds weight, so a small patch of strong colour holds down a corner that a large grey one could not. Density does too, since a paragraph of small text weighs more than the same area of empty space. So does isolation, which is why one element alone in a field pulls harder than it has any right to. And position multiplies all of it: the further from the axis, the more leverage, which is how a caption in the far corner can answer a photograph near the middle.
The whole of De Stijl is a thesis about this, arranging unequal rectangles until they hold still without ever being mirrored, and Swiss typographic layout inherited the same instinct. In interface work the practical version is smaller: when a screen feels tippy, find the element that has no answer, and either give it one, move it toward the axis, or lighten it. Balance is also not the same job as the focal point. One thing should still win. Balance is only the arrangement that lets it win without dragging the whole page over with it.
