Vertical rhythm
also called typographic rhythm, baseline rhythm
Spacing every block of text by multiples of one line height so the page keeps an even beat from top to bottom.
The unit is one line of body text. Pick a base size and a leading that multiply to a whole number, say 16px at 1.5 for a 24px line, and then every vertical measurement on the page is a multiple of that 24: the space above a heading, the space below it, the height of a rule, the margin under an image. Nothing has a size of its own; everything is counted in lines. The practice comes from print, where facing pages and adjacent columns had to align across the gutter, and a shared baseline grid was the only way to guarantee it.
Doing it properly means auditing everything that adds height. Headings need line-heights that are multiples of the unit rather than of their own font size, so a 32px heading might be set at 48px of leading rather than at 1.2. Borders are the classic leak: a 1px border adds a pixel to the box, so the padding beside it has to give one back. Images and embeds arrive at whatever height they arrive at, so they are either given a fixed aspect box that rounds to the unit or allowed to break the grid on purpose. Lists, blockquotes, and code blocks all need the same treatment, which is why rhythm is usually enforced by a handful of spacing tokens rather than by hand.
The web fights back in ways print did not. CSS aligns line boxes, not baselines:
the leading is split half above and half below the text, so the actual baseline
sits wherever the font’s own metrics put it, and swapping to a fallback face
with a different x-height moves it. Reader-set font sizes, fluid
type, and responsive line-height changes all shift the unit at runtime.
text-box-trim and text-box-edge are the parts of CSS that finally address
this, by trimming the half-leading so a text box starts at the cap height and
ends at the baseline, which is what makes real baseline alignment tractable
rather than approximate.
Strict rhythm is expensive and mostly invisible, and it is worth being honest about which half of the effect readers actually perceive. Nobody notices that a paragraph sits exactly three lines below a heading. What they do notice is inconsistency, and the relationship between the space above a heading and the space below it: more room above than below is what makes a heading belong to the section it introduces rather than float between two. A spacing scale derived from the line height, applied consistently, delivers nearly all of that with none of the pixel accounting. Reach for a true grid when the page really does have columns that must align, and take the beat without the ruler everywhere else.
