Type specimen
also called specimen sheet, font specimen, type sample
A display of a typeface's characters, sizes, and styles made to show what the face can do rather than to communicate the text itself.
A specimen is a typeface talking about itself. The genre is older than the printed book trade it served: a foundry would print a broadside showing every size it had cut, set in whatever text was handy, so a printer could choose metal without buying it first. The furniture has barely changed. A modern specimen still carries a display line at a size nobody reads at, a block of text at a size everybody does, a slice of the character set including the awkward parts, and a run through the weights and styles the family ships, which is where a font weight axis and the rest of a variable font get shown off.
What separates a good one from a poster is what it is for. A specimen exists so somebody
can judge the face in the job they have, which means the text has to stop being decorative
somewhere on the page. A line of large capitals flatters every typeface ever drawn; a
paragraph at fourteen pixels with real punctuation, a number, an ampersand and a word with
a double f in it does not, and that is the panel a working designer reads first. The same
logic explains why specimens carry those set phrases that use every letter of the
alphabet: they are a cheap way to guarantee the sample is not hiding a weak g.
The trap is treating a specimen as evidence about how the face will behave in your interface. A foundry’s specimen is set at the sizes and in the colours that make its drawing look best, and often in an optical size cut for exactly that use, so a display master shown at 120 points says nothing about the text master at 15 pixels. Judging a face means rebuilding the specimen with your own strings: your longest label, your worst number column, your interface at the density it actually ships.
A house specimen is also the natural place to show a superfamily as one thing, since the serif, the sans and the mono only make sense side by side with their shared metrics visible. The specimen on this page is one sheet, redrawn for each of the three faces this site loads, so what changes between them is the drawing and everything else holds still.
