component
- Gauge
A dial style readout showing one value on an arc between a minimum and a maximum, borrowed from instrument panels.
- Live activity
A persistent, updating view of something in progress, shown in system places like a lock screen so a reader can follow it without opening the app.
- Meter
A gauge of a known quantity within a known range, such as disk used or password strength, where the level is a fact rather than a task.
- Page indicator
The row of small dots under a carousel or onboarding screen showing how many pages there are and which one you are on.
- Progress bar
A filling bar reporting how far along a task is, determinate when the end is known and indeterminate when it is not.
- Progress ring
A circular progress indicator that fills around a ring, often with the percentage in the middle.
- Spinner
An indeterminate loading indicator that shows work is happening without saying how much of it is left.
- Step indicator
A row or column of numbered stages showing where you are in a multi step flow and what remains.
- Wizard
A flow broken into ordered steps with back and next controls, where each step validates before the next one is allowed.
pattern
- Endowed progress
Starting a progress meter part filled, so the reader feels they are continuing something already begun rather than starting from nothing.
- Goal gradient
Effort rising as a visible goal gets closer, which is why interfaces show how little is left rather than how much has been done.
- Labor illusion
Showing the work a system is doing, or stretching it, so the answer feels earned: the search that lists the sites it is checking instead of answering at once.
- Onboarding checklist
A persistent list of setup tasks with completion state and a progress meter, kept available so the reader can return to unfinished steps.
- Operational transparency
Showing the work as it happens, the kitchen made visible, so a wait is understood rather than merely endured and the result is trusted more for having been watched.
- Password strength meter
A gauge that scores a password while it is typed and names what would improve it, replacing a list of rules with continuous feedback.
- Reading progress
A bar tied to scroll position that shows how much of an article remains, usually pinned to the top edge and filling as the reader descends.
- Skeleton screen
A loading state made of grey shapes standing where the content will be, showing the layout before the data arrives.
- Steps left
Telling the reader where they are in a multi step task and how many steps are still to come, so the end of the task is visible from the start.
motion
- Count-up animation
Animating a number toward its value instead of setting it, often with digits rolling like an odometer so the change is legible.
- Shimmer
The moving highlight that sweeps across placeholder shapes to signal that content is still on its way.
accessibility
- Busy state
Marking a region as still loading so assistive technology waits for the finished result instead of reading each row as it streams in.
