Hover card

also called hovercard, rich preview, profile preview

A rich preview panel that appears on hover over a link or an avatar, summarising what is behind it.

A hover card answers a question the reader has not committed to asking. The pointer rests on a username, a repository link, or an avatar, and after a short delay a small panel arrives with the few facts that decide whether following the link is worth it: who this is, what this is, how many of them there are, and one thing to do about it. GitHub’s user cards and the profile previews in most social products are the shape everyone copies.

Three neighbours, three lines. A tooltip is a short text label that names the thing under the pointer, and it is never interactive, which is the whole reason it can afford to vanish the moment the pointer moves. A quick view is opened by a deliberate click and behaves as a dialog: the reader asked for it and closing it is the expected ending. A popover is the same rich surface as a hover card with a click for a trigger, which is really the only difference between the two. A hover card sits in the awkward middle, summoned by a pointer that made no decision, yet holding things worth aiming at.

That middle is what makes hoverable, dismissible, persistent a genuine obligation here rather than a nicety. If the card holds a Follow button, the pointer has to be able to travel from the trigger onto the card without the card disappearing on the way, so there can be no gap between them, or a transparent bridge across it. Escape has to close it without moving the pointer. And it must not close on a timer, since a reader magnifying the screen may need longer to find the panel than the timeout allows. The delay before it opens matters just as much in the other direction: with no hover intent built in, a paragraph full of mentions turns into a slideshow as the pointer crosses it.

The last rule is the one products break most often. Hover is not available to a keyboard, and it does not exist on touch at all, so everything in the card needs a second route: the same summary on the destination page, the same actions in a menu the row already has. Opening it on focus as well as hover covers the keyboard, and a tap that follows the link rather than opening a phantom card is the honest answer on a phone. A hover card is an accelerator for people who happen to have a pointer, never the only place a fact lives.
