Guest checkout

Guest checkout is the path through a purchase that does not pass through account creation. The shop still collects everything the order needs, an email address for the receipt, a delivery address, a payment method, and it simply does not ask for a password or store the result under a login. The account is not abolished, it is deferred: once the order is placed, the same details are already on screen and the shop can offer to keep them, which is a very different question from being asked to invent a password before anyone has agreed to sell anything.

The reason this is a named pattern rather than an obvious courtesy is that the account wall is one of the most expensive things a checkout can do. The Baymard Institute puts forced account creation among the leading causes of cart abandonment, with roughly 18% of shoppers walking away from an order specifically because they did not want an account. The buyer has already decided to spend money and is then asked for a second, unrelated commitment in the middle of it. Nothing about the transaction requires it, so the request reads as the shop’s convenience being priced into the buyer’s time.

Building it honestly is mostly a layout problem. Put both paths on the same screen, in the same row, at the same size, and label the guest one plainly: “Continue as guest” rather than “Continue” under a heading about accounts. Do not pre-select the account path, do not make the guest control a small underlined line beneath a filled button, and do not phrase the choice so that one answer sounds like the responsible one. The specimen above draws both versions for exactly this reason: the difference between guest checkout and an account wall is not usually a missing feature, it is which of two present controls was given the weight. The related move sometimes called lazy registration goes one step further and creates the account silently from what the buyer already typed, asking only for a password afterwards.

The pattern shares a family with several others worth keeping distinct. Check answers is about showing what is about to be submitted before the buyer commits, and belongs at the end of the same flow. Forced continuity is what happens when the account collected at checkout quietly becomes a subscription, which is the strongest argument for not collecting one at all. The confirmation page is where guest checkout does its other half of the work: the order is placed, the receipt is on screen, and the offer to save the address for next time can finally be made as an offer rather than as a toll.
