Chat bubble

also called message bubble, speech bubble, bubble (shadcn), message (shadcn)

A rounded container for one message in a conversation, aligned and coloured by who sent it, often with a tail toward the sender's side.

A chat bubble carries exactly one message. Everything about its appearance answers a single question the reader asks dozens of times while scrolling a thread: who said this? Three cues answer it at once, and they are redundant on purpose. Alignment puts the reader’s own messages on one side and everyone else’s on the other, fill colour separates the two groups, and the tail (or the one squared corner that stands in for it) points back toward the speaker.

The bubble is a container, not a row. Timestamps, delivery ticks, reactions and the sender’s avatar live around it rather than inside it, which is why a thread can group three consecutive messages from the same person under one avatar without redrawing anything. Width is the part most often got wrong: a bubble hugs its content up to a cap of roughly two thirds to three quarters of the column, so a one word reply stays small and a paragraph still breaks at a comfortable measure instead of running the full width of the screen.

Colour alone is never enough. A reader who cannot separate the two fills gets no information from a wall of identical shapes, so alignment has to carry the same distinction, and assistive technology needs the sender named in text rather than implied by paint. The usual fix is a visually hidden label per bubble or per group, plus a list structure so the thread reads as a sequence of items rather than as one long run of prose.

The word is loose about scale. In messaging products it names the message container; in illustration and comics a speech bubble is the balloon with the pointed tail, which is where the shape came from. Interfaces that are not conversations borrow it anyway, usually badly: a tooltip drawn as a bubble is still a tooltip, and a bubble with no counterpart on the other side is just a card with a strange corner.
